This role is a part of the HSSE team in BP Hull and provides process safety leadership, program management, execution and technical expertise to support the operating assets to achieve safe, reliable and compliant operation. To provide technical input for the process safety activities associated with new project development and process operation changes at BP Hull. The Process Safety Engineer role provides significant support for the compliance as an upper tier COMAH site and will provide specific expertise to support the site on process safety related items, as required.

Liaising with the appropriate S&OR Entity Directors and SETAs will be a key part of the role, to ensure suitable application and conformance to the BP Group Practices, applying for deviations if appropriate, and feeding back lessons learned to support BPs Continuous Improvement of Process Safety reviews and action management

Deep discipline expertise is paramount, along with cross-discipline technical awareness and an ability to work with multiple stakeholders to develop, deliver and influence process safety activities at BP Hull.

The Acetyls Business Unit is one of the business units making up the Petrochemicals Strategic Performance Unit, within the Downstream Segment. It is a business engaged in the entire value chain from manufacturing through to marketing and sales. BP Hull Site is the European manufacturing facility for the Acetyls Business Unit and is of significant strategic importance to the Global Business, with a focus on Manufacturing Petrochemicals as well as Research & Technology. Our core product range is Acetic Acid and Acetic Anhydride.

This role is a part of the HSSE team in BP Hull and provides process safety leadership, program management, execution and technical expertise to support the operating assets to achieve safe, reliable and compliant operation to provide technical feedback for the process safety activities associated with new project development and process operation changes at BP Hull. The Process Safety Engineer role provides significant support for the compliance as an upper tier COMAH site and will provide specific expertise to support the site on process safety related items.



Key Accountabilities

  • Set example on HSSE responsibilities with all teams with which they interact.
  • Ensure conformance with HSSE standards and expectations set through the BP group and act to foster a Believe in Zero culture.
  • Lead and govern process safety and the process safety programmes at BP Hull through the Process Safety Leadership Team. Responsible for the ownership of data, standards and best practices in order to ensure the site Leadership Team is informed of programs and interventions.
  • Responsible for the COMAH safety report and the relationship with Competent Authorities (Health and Safety Executive and Environmental Agency) including site visit preparation, delivery and management of actions.
  • Maintain the BP Risk and Process safety requirements including the Entity Risk Book, BP MARC model, Occupied Buildings, Hazop/LOPA program, Plant Start Up Audits, Incident Investigations, RoPD and IPL programmes, management of BP Requirements and Human Factors risk assessment.
  • Owner of selected Hull site specific activities including OMS sub-elements, site SSOs, MAF specialist approver and supporting Continuous Improvement projects.
  • Proactively network and monitor to provide support for the operating assets, driving activities such as data improvements, asset registers and asset plans.
  • Provide ownership of the Process Safety discipline health.


Essential Criteria & Qualifications

  • Degree qualified (or higher), in Chemical Engineering or similar engineering discipline.
  • Chartership in Engineering.
  • Deep technical knowledge base with proven experience in manufacturing industries through HSE, process safety, projects or TAR within the Petrochemical or Refining industries with technical speciality in key areas, and a broad working knowledge of other disciplines.
  • A proven record of process safety practices; particularly exposure to HAZOP, LOPA, PHA and area classification etc.
  • Experience of process commissioning and current legislative requirements e.g. COMAH and Environment.
  • A good working knowledge of process safety risk assessment tools, consequence modelling techniques and running models to support the site quantified risk assessment work.
  • A good working knowledge to national and international codes and standards relevant to process design and equipment selection.
  • Evidence of ownership of initiatives, programs, actions and activities within their control.
  • Excellent networking skills to engage with the broader Petchems and S&OR functions.


Desirable Criteria & Qualifications

  • Detailed knowledge of Hull sites processes, systems and procedures is seen as advantageous but not essential.
